MANILA, Philippines - The Dream Match won't go the distance, if Freddie Roach is asked.
In an interview with GMANews.TV on Friday, Manny Pacquiao's trainer was asked to predict what round the Pacquiao-Oscar de la Hoya bout would end. He had a terse reply.
"Ninth round."
Pacquiao finished a five-round sparring session with light-middleweight Rashad Holloway and Roach was pleased with what he saw Thursday afternoon at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

US Basketball "Redeem Team" wins the Olympic Gold!

They may not be Filipino's but most of my neighbors are tuning in to watch their Gold Medal game against Spain.
Well as everybody expected they won the Olympic Gold medal but it didn't come easy as Spain gave everything they have. Spain's Ricky Rubio is a prospect to watch and my friend told me that he is a prospect for the next NBA Draft.
Final score is 118-107, US just redeemed itself as a basketball super power.

RP wushu athlete cops gold in Olympic demo sport

The Philippines can find some solace in Willy Wang’s feat.
Wang won the gold medal in the combined events of men’s nanquan and nangun (bare fists) Friday to somehow make up for the country’s listless performance in the Beijing Olympics.
But because wushu is only a demonstration sport, Wang’s victory will not count in the regular medal standings.
The wushu gold is reminiscent of the gold medal won by Arianne Cerdeña in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Cerdeña’s triumph in bowling did not count because it was an exhibition sport.

BEIJING--Filipino-American Daniel Coakley shot down the swimming squad’s fourth national record in as many days Thursday as Team Philippines picked up the pieces of boxing’s stunning debacle at the Beijing Olympics here. An 18-year-old Hawaiian with the genes of Filipino Olympic immortal Teofilo Yldefonso, Coakley clocked 22.69 seconds in finishing sixth in the ninth heat of the 50-meter freestyle sprint, shaving eleventh of a second off his months-old RP mark of 22.80.

Donaire parts way with promoter
Pinoy flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. has just been release by his promoter Gary Shaw.Gary Shaw is an awful promoter and parting ways with him is the best decision Donaire ever made. He is due for big fights and I think Mr. Shaw did a very terrible job in promoting his fighter.
I hope he signs up with Golden Boy or with Top Rank anytime soon.

Big start by GenSan, Zamboanga bets
LANAO DEL NORTE—Working at the banana plantations of Bukidnon province has kept this long-distance runner in tip-top shape despite missing competition for quite some time.
Vincent Neri took time off from his chores in Malaybalay to rule the boys’ 5,000-meter run and earn the distinction of clinching the first gold medal of the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival Mindanao qualifying games here.
A part-time banana carrier employed by multinational firm Dole, the 17-year-old Neri clocked 17 minutes and 10.41 seconds to seize the gold at the expense of Zamboanga’s Glenn Arellano, who timed 17:11.78, and Eduardo Padial of Agusan Del Sur, who clocked 17:13.56.

Penalosa's 2nd title defense to be held in Cebu
Gerry "Fearless" Peñalosa the WBO bantamweight king is set to defend his title against Mexican Isidro "El Chino" Garcia on July 19 or 26 on Cebu City. The undercard will also feature Oscar "Cholo" Larios of Mexico in his comeback fight against Indonesia's Alexander Bajawa.
Also the unbeaten pinoy WBO Oriental superbantam champ Ciso Morales will be squaring against Hussein Pazzi of Tanzania.
Peñalosa's last fight was against Thailand's Ratanachai Sor Vorapin, stopping the Thai in eight rounds.
Yesterday while I was going thru Manny Pacquiao's website I stumbled on a thread indicating Penalosa's plan on retiring in boxing, geez I hope he fights Daniel Ponce de Leon for the last time, because I truly believe that de Leon's victory against Penalosa is not convincing.

Bata Reyes book in the works

Efren "Bata" Reyes the greatest and the most written-about billiard player in history is now setting his sights in books.
For three decades since 1978 he has occupied the center stage of premiere billiard competition. His victories and losses are witness by some of our fellow kababayan. But what makes Bata very special is that the way he treat losses.
He is a very admirable loser, meekly smiliing and shaking his head and saying " Talagang ganyan. Hindi palaging panalo (It’s a fact, you can’t win them all).”
Hailed as one of the Asian Heroes in the 60th anniversary issue of Time Asia (Nov. 13, 2006). On that issue, Bata is joined by former President Corazon C. Aquino, and late Hong Kong martial arts sensation Bruce Lee.
Indeed, Bata gain the respect of everyone, and having a piece of this book i my way of saying to bata " Salamat! " .
Lets support the debut of a Fil-Am Fighter
He started his campaign as an amateur boxer way back in 1994. Oyertime, his record is 49 wins and 7 losses. His last amateur fight was in May 2007, where he lost a close fight during the US Olympic Trials in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mauleon will be pitted against Thomas Rittenbaugh whose record stands at 2-2-2, not a bad competition for a debut fight.
Lets support out kababayan on his quest for boxing supremacy. For tickets please contact Ramon at 213-926-1885 or John at 818-795-7084

Pacquiao, Diaz assured boxing fans of a treat this June 28

Most of the time, boxing press conference bereft of the usual taunting and arrogant remarks common among professional boxers. WBC super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao and world lightweight champion David Diaz instead heaped praises on each other and assured boxing fans they are in for a great fight.
Manny Pacquiao is a huge favorite as he moves up in weight, and gunning for an early knock out. Fight promoter Bob Arum is having difficulty convincing fans that the fight is no mismatch and that Diaz is a tough cookie.
If Manny fights his guts out on this match I think Diaz will be knocked out in 7th or 8th round.

Barako whoops Dragons to take the lead

The entire Red Bull Barako line-up contributed in whatever way possible for a strong start that led to a 109-88 annihilation of the Welcoat Dragons, which gave Red Bull the temporary lead in the elimination round of the Smart-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Cup.
The Barako showed their preparedness against the Dragons, breaking out of the gates hard and never letting up on the way to erecting comfortable margins that settled the outcome early.
Red Bull improved to 7-2 in the first half of its eliminations stint, while the Dragons, who came into the game the winners of three of their last four games, dropped to 3-6.
